Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) starts out innocently enough. Bacteria on your teeth and gums feed on the sugars from the foods you eat, forming sticky plaque. Left alone, plaque becomes hardened tartar that can only be removed by a dentist. Over time, pockets of bacteria can form between your teeth roots and gums. Regular dental cleanings and exams, however, will help prevent this process from happening.
Dr. Richard and his team have two great methods to treat your gum disease. The first method involves the deep cleaning techniques of scaling and root planing. We will gently remove (scale) the built-up tartar above and below your gumline, then smooth (plane) the teeth roots to help stop bacteria from re-collecting on them. This procedure may need repeating every few months to help keep gum disease under control.
Our second method of treating gum disease involves using a low-power laser. This pain-free, stitch-free technique removes bacteria and any damaged gum tissue while resealing the gums at the same time. This gentle process stops infection so that your gums can begin to heal.

"A person can have gum disease that really just needs us to clean their teeth, and that'll heal in 24 hours. We have other people that they have things called periodontal pockets. With that, there's some bone loss, and there's some bacteria that's now below the gums that you can't see. Some of those patients need four appointments of over an hour and a half each where we clean these pockets. We disinfect these pockets. Then, we hope we have them on maybe a schedule like that every three months that we're just doing the cleaning.
Periodontal disease can involve also where we may have to send someone to a specialist, and that's a whole another area. That's rare. We try to do a lot of nonsurgical periodontal treatment here, and that means we clean out these pockets. We can actually put a product in called Arestin® that's just nothing more than an antibiotic gel that keeps it disinfected while the gum heals and the bone heals. When somebody asks us about gum disease, I say, It's everything from give us a half hour and we can help you heal it, to we may need a little more time on this."
